Abstract

This book proposes and validates a number of methods and shortcuts for frugal engineers, which will allow them to significantly reduce the computational costs for analysis and reanalysis and, as a result, for structural design processes. The need for accuracy and speed in analyzing structural systems with ever-tighter design tolerances and larger numbers of elements has been relentlessly driving forward research into methods that are capable of analyzing structures at a reasonable computational cost. The methods presented are of particular value in situations where the analysis needs to be repeated hundreds or even thousands of times, as is the case with the optimal design of structures using different metaheuristic algorithms. Featuring methods that are not only applicable to skeletal structures, but by extension also to continuum models, this book will appeal to researchers and engineers involved in the computer-aided analysis and design of structures, and to software developers in this field. It also serves as a complement to previous books on the optimal analysis of large-scale structures utilizing concepts of symmetry and regularity. Further, its novel application of graph-theoretical methods is of interest to mathematicians.

Abstract

"A practical introduction to the engineering science and mathematics required for engineering study and practice.Science and Mathematics for Engineering is an introductory textbook that assumes no prior background in engineering. This new edition covers the fundamental scientific knowledge that all trainee engineers must acquire in order to pass their examinations and has been brought fully in line with the compulsory science and mathematics units in the new engineering course specifications. A new chapter covers present and future ways of generating electricity, an important topic.John Bird focuses upon engineering examples, enabling students to develop a sound understanding of engineering systems in terms of the basic laws and principles. This book includes over 580 worked examples, 1300 further problems, 425 multiple choice questions (with answers), and contains sections covering the mathematics that students will require within their engineering studies, mechanical applications, electrical applications and engineering systems. This book is supported by a companion website of materials that can be found at www.routledge/cw/bird. This resource includes fully worked solutions of all the further problems for students to access, and the full solutions and marking schemes for the revision tests found within the book for instructor use. In addition, all 447 illustrations will be available for downloading by lecturers." [Publisher]

Abstract

The book collects a broad range of models and theories on socio-economic systems. It is divided into three parts, the first of which is devoted to social work. The book examines essential principles and problems in social work, analyzes the role played by social workers, and discusses their commitment and motivation, while also considering many related aspects. In turn, the second part focuses on new trends in education. It addresses not only the transformation of educational activities at traditional universities, including the move toward more flexible and open education, the management of interpersonal relations in the classroom, and visual literacy, but also many other aspects of the modern educational process. Because of the wide spectrum of topics touched on by socio-economic systems, the book’s final part covers a range of issues in Mathematics, Statistics, Teaching, Social Science, and Economics. Given its scope, the book will appeal, in equal measure, to sociologists, mathematicians, statisticians and philosophers, and more generally to scholars and specialists in related fields.
